What would I have achieved without properly controlled and well executed training? In my early running days I was one of those athletes relying solely on my sensations, which meant that one day I would run like mad and out of control, and the next day I was unable to take two steps in a row. Totally crazy! But one lucky day the best sports physiologist the world has ever seen set his eyes on this runaway athlete and everything changed. My biggest surprise came when that scholar extracted a blood sample from my earlobe, analyzed it and said to me: “kid, you will be a great marathon runner”. From that very moment, my life changed. A methodical, scientific and well structured training plan showed me the way I needed to follow to become World Champion in the Marathon.

Endurance training has been a major part of my daily life over the last forty years. Both during my elite running career when the main goal was to perform optimally in competition, and nowadays with a stronger focus on recreation and health, my day-today was and still is determined by my training schedule. Long-distance running is a way of life for me. My major international results were the outcome of my own effort, and always grounded on a scientific basis and the practical knowledge of great experts on training, physiology, sports medicine and related sport sciences. Today, I still follow those scientific principles and the practical experience accumulated over the years to stay in good shape and transmit my knowledge to the young runners that I coach.

The book you are now holding in your hands, Endurance Training – Science and Practice, has been edited by someone fully committed to scientific training; someone who is also the best example of what both science and practical experience can offer to us endurance training practitioners. My friend Iñigo Mujika compiles in this book the most up-to-date scientific and practical knowledge of many of the world’s most reputable experts in endurance training, but the text is written in a concise and clear way so that it is understandable and applicable by all of us. Iñigo’s experience acquired over many years in this area, his background knowledge on this topic and the fact that recognized world class athletes train under his direction make him a highly qualified expert on endurance sports. “Muji”, what would I have done without your help! Dear readers, enjoy the book and… keep on running!
