I was wondering if I could pick your brains a little on a presentation I am preparing for british disability swimming coaches on tapering – maintance vs. detraining. I have been reading through your extensive work on tapering and was wondering whether you could give me say 3 main key points to consider for coaches when balancing between enhancing or detremental performance gains? Or any recent research you have been working on to additional assist with my presentation. Or anything I should be involving/highlighting predominantly in my talk.
Many thanks Nicola

Hi Nicola,
It is hard to synthesize things like this, but they should know that the risk of under-resting is often much higher than over-resting (i.e. detraining). They should keep an eye on energy intake to balance reduced energy expenditure. And they should listen to what athletes have to say about how they feel in the lead-up to conpetition. Everything is in “Tapering and peaking for optimal performance”.
